I’ve been an Amazon Prime member for years, so I think there are always great reasons to join (free 2-day shipping, free streaming videos and music, advance access to special deals, etc.)
But there are some particularly good reasons to join right now.
1. July 15: More Deals than Black Friday
To celebrate their 20th anniversary, Amazon has announced that this coming Wednesday, July 15th, they will be having a special event for Prime members only.
“Prime Day is a one-day shopping event on July 15, 2015, with more deals than Black Friday. Prime members can shop exclusive deals from electronics, toys, video games, movies, clothing, patio, lawn and garden, sports and outdoor items and more.”
Until then, a little advance prep can help improve your chances of snagging a great deal (or deals!).
2. Free Whaaa…?
Remember when your Amazon Prime membership included free 2-day delivery? That was so nice.
Well, now it includes free SAME-DAY delivery! This only applies to certain U.S. locations and it’s not on every product, but it worked for me yesterday when I ordered a pair of Bluetooth earbuds and selected 1-day delivery fully expecting to pay the extra shipping fee. When I saw they had deducted the $5.99 from my order*, I kept scrolling through the screen double-checking I hadn’t accidentally requested 2-day delivery. But nope, I got them last night. For free.
* That was just my first surprise on this order. My second surprise was when I discovered a notice on the page that there was a promotional code available (6I6RYEEF – no idea how long it will last) to buy one pair of these regularly priced $39.99 earbuds for just $17.99! So, yeah, you could definitely say that yesterday was a good Amazon day for me…
3. New Scholarship Program
If you have a child heading off to college this fall, you’re probably in full-blown shopping mode at the moment. So I’m guessing any potential money-saving opportunities would probably be very welcome right about now.
Amazon recently announced a new merit-based scholarship program for 50 Amazon Student members enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program at a U.S. non-profit college or university in the fall of 2015.
The Amazon Student program is free for 6 months and offers free 2-day shipping during that period. If you don’t cancel, you’ll automatically be charged the student rate of $49/year to get regular Amazon Prime benefits.
Obviously all of the programs above have various restrictions; the fine print is available on Amazon’s website. And remember… There’s a 30-day free trial even for the regular Prime program, so sign up today to be eligible for all the great Prime benefits!
