Change Your Amazon Fire TV Interface from German to English

I’ve received a few comments over the last few months from people who have set up their Amazon Fire TV streaming media players only to discover the interface is in German, a language they do not speak. If this happens to you, here are the steps to change it to English.

  1. Press and hold the Home button on the Fire TV remote for a few seconds to bring up the Quick Menu.

  2. Click the Einstellungen (Settings) button.
  3. Scroll over to the System button and select Sprache (Language) from the menu.

  4. Select the language you want to use.

Ta-da!

    • Hi Tareq. I think the only way to change the language is to change the store to a country for which it's the default language. It's definitely something that could be improved! - Elizabeth

  • Thanks! Now can you tell us how to do this on the new Apple TV Amazon Prime Video app? I’m in Germany but speak English and can’t figure out how to change it.

    • Hi CC.

That's a great question! Unfortunately, I've just taken a look and can't find a way either. I even used a VPN to change my location to Germany to see if that changed the language, but it kept it English. I'm guessing it's because you have your Amazon store set for Germany and you can change the language for the actual store, but they haven't thought about that for the app.

In the app, go to the Settings and choose Feedback. It will give you a couple of options for getting help from Amazon. Generally speaking, I've always found the company very responsive; however, I'm not entirely convinced this is something that can be changed unless they make a fix to the app itself.

If you do find a method, please come back and let us know!

    • Hi Stephen.

The same steps should work, except obviously the text for the various buttons will be in Japanese until you change them.

  • What if the menu is in English, but the contents (e.g. movie names and descriptions) is in another language (in my case it's in Japanese for some reason)?
    Thanks

    • Hi Igor.

Hmmm... I haven't seen that before. Are the Japanese names showing up for a specific app (e.g. Netflix, Hulu, etc.) or is it for all of them? If it's just for one app, I'd look for option settings for it both in the app on the Fire TV and on the company's online site.

If it's across the board, I'd go to the Fire TV's System settings and check you have the most recent software update and if you do, restart the system to see if that makes a difference.

    • I'm glad you found it helpful, Marc. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
